Plaza Alta (“High Square”) has been the scene of many important chapters in the history of Algeciras. It is one of the most significant and popular places in the city.
In the early 19th century, General Castaños proposed the construction before the Grand Admiral Manuel Godoy. He aimed to turn it into a monument which would remind that time forever.
Of extraordinary dimensions, it has received different names along its two centuries of life. What is more, it has undergone some changes from the original project. The most significant one is the installation in 1929 of the unique flooring that the square has. It was designed by Sevillian ceramic factories called Cerámica Santa Ana and Cerámica de Triana Casa González.
