The remains of a Roman building were discovered in an area of the tombolo in 2018. It can only be accessed when there is low tide. There are several archaeological sites, among which a salting factory and a temple dedicated to the goddess Juno, queen of the gods and goddess of marriage stand out. A Spanish-Muslim settlement was also discovered, of which a part of a watchtower dating from the 9th century is preserved.
The historical event that has given popularity to the Trafalgar Tombolo was the well-known Battle of Trafalgar of 1805. During this battle, more than 5,000 soldiers died, endless ships sank and Spain lost naval superiority to the British Navy.
