The Stevedores to the Indies Tour (“Ruta de los Cargadores a Indias”) shows how the city of Cádiz was like during the 17th and 18th centuries.
We start the route at the Tourist Information point located on the Paseo de Canalejas before appreciating the Plaza San Juan de Dios. Here we can look at the statue granted by the city of Cádiz to the Cádiz-born man of letters and politician Segismundo Moret.
We go now to Plocia street, where we will see the Palacio de Congresos (“House of Congress”) and the Church of Santo Domingo. While we go up a couple of characteristic streets of Cádiz we find La Merced Municipal Centre of Flamenco Art, with a commemorative statue of Chano Lobato.
After these monuments we return to the Town Hall Square, and then we stroll through narrow streets that connect with the Arco del Pópulo and with the Casa del Almirante. Previously we will have passed under the Arco de la Rosa that gives way to the Cathedral Square, unique in all of Spain.
We continue the Stevedores to the Indies Tour through a quite busy street, arriving at Plaza de las Flores and the Correos building. A little further on we will find the Mercado de Abastos, rebuilt as a Roman square. We assure you that it is worth seeing and walking through it.
Taking Sacramento Street we reach the Tavira Tower, which houses incredible views of Cádiz. Here we find a Camera Obscura that gives us a vision of the city in a unique way.
After seeing the Tía Norica Puppet Theatre, we will take a walk along Ancha Street, one of the most important shopping streets in the city. Before reaching Plaza San Antonio, we turn right to discover the Archaeological and Fine Arts Museum of Cádiz.
The route is already coming to an end, with a walk along Rosario Street. Here we can find an oratory before arriving at the Church of San Agustín, where the route finally ends.
In short, the Stevedores to the Indies Tour is fantastic to enjoy both with family and friends. Stop to eat some delicious tapas along the main streets of Cadiz.
