The Río Majaceite – Sendero El Bosque-Benamahoma route (“Majaceite River – El Bosque-Benamahoma Trail) is one of the best known and most practised routes in the entire sierra de Cádiz. Thanks to its low difficulty and its beauty, it is ideal for families to do at any time of the year.
Although you can find on holidays some tourists, the river provides a visual spectacle. Poplar, willow, oleander, cassis, rose, thorn bushes, clematis and honeysuckle are among the typical plants. Likewise, an abundance of wildlife such as otters and many birds like the golden oriole, blackbird, wagtail, warbler, robin or the nightingale.
We can start the route in the northwestern area of Benamahoma, next to Venta El Bujío restaurant, specifically. The route is made parallel to the river. It is very interesting to see how at certain times of the year the river runs with great force and speed. Being such a rainy area, the river always has a lot of flow (despite its narrowness). The route is ideal to do it at any time of the year. In summer it is a good option, since it is a different destination from sun and sand. The temperatures are mild due to the lush forest that surrounds it.
In winter it would be convenient to see beforehand the weather for the planned day, since, being such a rainy area, it may rain. Precisely because of the high rainfall of the area, it is surprising the lush forest that surrounds the path. The species that abound are quarrels, shrubs and blackberries. If the weather and the temperature accompanies, you can make part of the route through the river jumping from stone to stone, in the shallow sections of the river.
In the first section of the route, we will find a fairly clear section of vegetation until we enter the path. This is somewhat narrow, but very comfortable to walk. As we go along the path, there will be sections where we can barely see the sky. We will discover, on the banks of the river, remains of old mills used to take advantage of the force of the water. Many days you can see the popular trouts that inhabit this river.
In the last section of the route, already near El Bosque, the path moves away from the course of the river reaching the Botanical Garden. Already crossing the town we reach the end of the route: the trout farm where, in a small pool, this species is raised. You can even take some specimen for culinary purposes!
