The Sierra de Cádiz has a great offer of active tourism. Hiking and bike routes are some of the main activities of this type of tourism that you can practise in the Sierra de Cádiz. Therefore, the Route of the Vía Verde de la Sierra is a must for the visitor. In this way, you will know the surroundings of the Sierra de Cádiz in a different and healthy way.
This route is made up of six municipalities: Pruna, Olvera, Coripe, Puerto Serrano, Montellano and El Coronil.
This route was not designed to be configured as a scenic route. In principle, it was going to become a railway network that would unite all the Sierra de Cadiz and be able to export the wines of Jerez. This remained in an unfinished project that has recently become this vía verde. However, a great work was executed that managed to adapt the layout of the road to the steep orography of this area. The phase executed of the project allowed to eliminate the great unevenness of the area through excavations and tunnels. This helps the route to have very little slope and is very easy to go through.
The most advisable thing is to do it by bike, since the 36-km-route will be more enjoyable. It is recommended to do it with children, thanks to its low difficulty. It is also very striking, because the route goes through duly illuminated tunnels.
As cultural attractions, we can observe along the route the different train stations that were to be used in a first project. Today they work as restaurants, hostels, small hotels, hermitages and tourist information points.
As for the natural attractions, if we look at the sky and carry binoculars with us it is very common to see griffon vultures and different birds of prey that nest on the rocky walls of cliffs and hills that surround the road. It will also be common to cross a flock of sheep or goats, which in certain sections are crossings of cattle. We will be surrounded by holm oaks, Gall oaks, carob trees, lentisks and olive trees and, sometimes, with the hum of the water of the Guadalete and Guadalporcún rivers. And on its banks we will find ash trees, white or black poplars and oleanders.
