Bodegas El Gato winery, in Rota, is a family business since 1957. It is located in the old town of Rota. During a visit, you will try Fino wines such as Moscatel, Cream, Pedro Ximenez, Oloroso and the famous Tintilla of Rota. A great experience in the field of wine tastings or guided winery tours that you can combine with a visit to the tavern next door.
During a visit to Bodegas El Gato, you will get to know the different traditions and customs of Rota (Province of Cadiz). In this fishing village, there are a variety of wines that are produced from the small Tintilla grape. The result is a perfect dessert wine, although you can enjoy it as an aperitif.
Since 1957, Juan Martín Martínez Niño “El Gato” produces wine with his family. Here they take care of every detail, from the vineyard to bottling. In the wine cellar you will find select wines such as Moscatel, Cream, Pedro Ximenez, Oloroso and Tintilla Rota. These are marketed under the brands “El Mayeto y J. Martinez”.
During the tour in the winery, you will see an old and rudimentary bottling plant, which still works. The tour goes through a small laboratory, a wine cellar where most wine barrels are stored or aging. Finally, you will get to an almost sacred place of the winery, “La Sacristía”, where the oldest and most valuable wines of the house are stored.
You can also attend events, theatre visits (role playing) and wine tastings that take place regularly in the winery.
Make even a small stop in the adjoining tavern, where homemade food and a daily set menu go perfectly with the fine wines of the house.
If you visit Rota, you absolutely should discover Bodegas El Gato winery. You know what? “Penicillin cures, but wine makes people happy.” 😉
