The old Punic settlement became Colonia Libertinorum Carteia in 171 BC. C. There were established more than 4000 men, children of Roman soldiers and Hispanic women.
Carteia was depopulated since the seventh century, but the remains of a large city were always recognised.
It was declared Site of Cultural Interest in 1968.
The funds that can be enjoyed here belong to the ancient archeology showroom, collections of Santa-Olalla and private donations.
