Pinar del Rey is a huge forest park that has become one of the most important green areas of Campo de Gibraltar. It is a natural space that has recently been incorporated into Los Alcornocales Natural Park after expanding in 2017. It occupies an area of 338 hectares in San Roque and Castellar de la Frontera.
Its origin is curious. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Spanish Navy planted trees in this area to supply wood with which to build warships. Once the Napoleonic wars ended, the Pinar del Rey ceased to serve the Navy and became a recreational area.
Currently, the objective of Pinar del Rey is to neutralise the pollution emitted by the industrial estates of the Bay of Algeciras. But not only that, as it also offers a place of leisure. For this purpose, a picnic area was created and two paths were enabled. In addition, each spring the Romería de San Roque (San Roque Pilgrimage) is celebrated here.
