The Fortress Castle of Setenil de las Bodegas is located in the highest part of this town of Cadiz.
Being a good example of medieval military architecture, it was reconquered at the end of the 15th century. It was completely walled despite the irregularities of the terrain and had, at least, two large defensive positions. Of the set, only the tower keep and a cistern are preserved.
The fortified tower was built during the Arab occupation, probably the Almohad period (12th-13th centuries). It was a major obstacle to the conquest. After seven attempts, on September 21, 1484, it was taken from the Muslims by the troops of the Catholic Monarchs.
This tower is the most prominent example of the old fortress, along with the cistern at its feet and the remains of the wall. These border the rock where it rose that protected the medieval village.
You will be surprised when visiting this Fortress Castle; not only because of the history that surrounds it, but because of the incredible white town where it is located.
