The Convento de Santa Paula, in Seville, was the first convent to be declared a historic-artistic monument and the only one of all Seville which has a museum inside. Besides, don't hesitate to try the delicious artisanal pastries made by the nuns.
The Convento de Santa Paula (“Santa Paula Convent”) was built in the fifteenth century as an enclosed monastery for nuns of the Order of St. Jerome. It is located in Seville city centre, at Santa Paula street, just behind the San Marcos Parish. The gardens of the convent originally occupied a vast expanse of land.
It was the first convent of Seville to be declared a historic-artistic monument, so it is also considered a Cultural Asset. This convent is a good example of how different architectural styles can be fused to perfection. We find Gothic, Mudejar and Renaissance styles.
The most impressive altarpiece, of baroque style, is where the image of Santa Paula is located: the main altarpiece. San Juan Bautista, Virgen del Rosario and Santo Cristo altarpieces are also noteworthy. There are also patios and well-tended gardens.
Convento de Santa Paula is the only convent that has a museum inside. You will find there items of great value; such as pieces of Sevillian baroque, altarpieces and paintings by great artists.
On TUDESTINO we suggest to all those sweet-toothed to come to the Convento de Santa Paula, because nuns make delicious handmade jams, cakes and pastries. Don’t hesitate to try everything!
