Plaza del Triunfo, in Seville, is surrounded by historical buildings such as the Alcazar of Seville (with the Patio de Banderas within its walls), the Plaza de España and the Seville Cathedral. But do you know why this square, located in the Santa Cruz district, is called like that? Keep on reading and we will explain it to you.
The bandstand in the Plaza, with an image of the Virgin and baby Jesus, was called El Triunfo (“The Triumph”) after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. It was built to thank the divine protection the Sevilians received during that tragic event. Since then, a Mass is traditionally celebrated every year in front of the bandstand. Nevertheless, about three hundred houses collapsed and killed nine people who, according to legend, were “in mortal sin”. In addition, the Giralda suffered minor damage; unlike the Torre del Oro, which was about to be demolished. When visiting the square, get close to the bandstand and you will read the facts stated therein.
In the early twentieth century, a remodelling took place after which a monument to the Immaculate Conception stands out at one end of the square.
We recommend to stop by the Plaza del Triunfo. Sit and rest for a while on one of its benches as you admire the extraordinary architectural beauty around you.
