Patio de Banderas, in Seville, is located in the magical district of Santa Cruz. Over time it has fulfilled different functions, but today is another very special spot of Seville.
Patio de Banderas (literally, “Flags Patio”) is a public square located inside the walls of the Alcazar of Seville, in the charming Santa Cruz district. It is not known for sure where its name comes from. However, it is believed to be because of the number of flags waving when some illustrious personality visited the Alcazar. Thanks to the Ibero American Exhibition of 1929, the Patio de Banderas was remodelled and the central fountain was added, a pipeclay and a road on which vehicles can be driven.
It was built during the Muslim period with the aim of being a palace, but it is believed that this area previously housed a Christian basilica and even a Roman building in Hispalis times. Over the years it functioned both as armoury and as riding school. Now it is a very used area for tourists and residents. This is so because its orange trees and magnificent views of the Giralda give the place a cosy atmosphere.
You can reach the Patio de Banderas through the Plaza del Triunfo. Just opposite there you can find the “Apeadero” door of the Alcazar of Seville, where carriages were kept at the time. You can also go into Patio de Banderas through Judería Street.
On your Sevilian route we are sure you won’t forget to visit special places like the Jardines de Murillo or the Hospital de los Venerables. Apart from all of them, we suggest you to visit the Alcazar of Seville and to let yourself go in the wonderful Santa Cruz district. Once you are there you will understand why there is a Spanish song that says that the Patio de Banderas “only with heaven can be compared”.
