Our suggested route to spend a day in Cadiz
Start your day off with a morning walk through the Promenade located to the west of the city alongside the lengthy Playa de la Victoria. Here you may spend a nice relaxing morning on the beach, doing some water sports or having breakfast at one of the many local kiosks. As you make your way north towards the Old City, you will pass by the Playa de Santa Maria del Mar where many surfers practice regularly.
Moving on we reach the Murallas Puertas de Tierra, the astounding walled entrance to the city. Just past the walls, art lovers will find the Museo del Titere and, a bit towards the seaside, the Galeria de Arte Baluarte de San Roque.
Continuing the path northwards, we stumble upon the gigantic Catedral de Cadiz. This magnificent cathedral is a prime example of baroque architecture that can be seen from miles aways and offers breathtaking views from any of its two massive towers.
As we arrive at the northernmost point of the city, we find ourselves at the famous Playa de la Caleta which is itself surrounded by both the Castillos de San Sebastian and the Castillo de Santa Catalina. The latter castle offers an art gallery free of charge.
Here, at the end of the promenade, we arrive at the Parque Genoves. It is a long and enchanting park filled with beautiful plants offering a quick escape from the hundreds of adjacent buildings. Just alongside this park, is the Baluerte de la Canderlaria, a stronghold with an impressive view of the sea and the neighboring city: El Puerto de Santa Maria.
We can’t end our visit without paying a visit to the Torre Tavira located at the center of Old Cadiz. This structure offers one of the most peculiar views of the city using a technology called: Camera Obscura. Within this chamber, you can witness a magnificent real-time view of the entire city.
By now it’s surely getting dark and the only thing left to do is choose one of the many bars, beach bars and restaurants the city offers to dine and ‘tapear’. Be it in the Populo, La Viña or any of the many local neighborhoods, you won’t have a lack of options to choose from. As we say goodbye enjoying a nice glass of wine or a pint of beer from the comfort of a nice balcony overlooking the city; we are sure you will be planning your return trip to Cadiz.
