Its origin is La Línea de Contravalación, which Philip V of Spain built during the 18th-century sieges of Gibraltar. This prevented the passage through the isthmus that joins it with the Rock of Gibraltar. After the War of Independence (1810), the civilians who began to arrive in order to work in Gibraltar built, under the ruins of the border lines, huts and shacks.
This will be the germ of the first population centre of La Línea. The city will take the name of Concepción in honour of the patron saint of the Infantry Corps (closely linked to its history).
It has an urban planning of colonial connotations, conserving a torre almenara (16th century) and remains of the fortresses of Santa Bárbara and San Felipe (18th century), in addition to the Church of la Inmaculada.
Among the huge museum offer, they have room for the Cruz Herrera Museum and the Isthmus Museum, with archaeological funds, as well as for the Pepe Cabrera Municipal Bullfighting Museum, one of the most important of its kind in Spain.
One of the main tourist attractions is its beaches: La Alcaidesa, El Burgo, La Hacienda, La Atunara and, above all, Poniente. You can practise there any type of water sport, whether sailing, water skiing, windsurfing or sport fishing. Moreover, Los Alcornocales Natural Park is very close to the city.
