Tarifa, the kingdom of windsurfing and gateway to Europe, is one of the best known tourist destinations in the province of Cádiz. Its incredible beaches, leisure offer, active and culinary tourism and its cultural heritage with important sites make this destination an essential visit. Thanks to this Travel Guide to Tarifa you can find all the activities and the best travel tips for your trip.
Looking out to the sea, it is located in the closest point to Africa in Europe. To its numerous prehistoric remains we must add the Phoenician vestiges of the Isla de las Palomas and, above all, those of the Roman era. The valuable city of Baelo Claudia is the most valuable archaeological site in the entire province. Called by the Muslims Al-Yazirat Tarif (Tarif Island), it has been an important strategic point as a border area.
From the walls of the 10th to 16th centuries, there are two different sections: the first, from the Islamic period, surrounding a smaller enclosure; and the second covers the entire old town. You will find there the churches of San Mateo, San Francisco and Santa Maria. The Castle of Guzmán El Bueno is one of its most valued cultural heritage. Commanded to build by the Caliph of Cordoba Abd al-Rahman III, it is very well preserved. We have to highlight its great octagonal tower, the Puerta de Jerez and the Watchtowers of the 16th century.
Its idyllic and long beaches blown by the east wind make Tarifa a place of worship for water sports lovers such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, flysurfing, Blokar or scuba diving, among others. After Playa Chica, Los Lances and Valdevaqueros comes Playa de Bolonia, a wild beach where you can practise nudism in one of its areas. El Cañuelo is a beach with a natural environment, with lofty vegetation, fine sand and crystal clear waters. You can reach the beach from the Camarinal Lighthouse. Los Alemanes beach stretches from the La Plata Cape to Gracia Cape. Finally, Atlanterra is the continuation of Zahara de los Atunes.
Tarifa extends across four different protected natural areas: Los Alcornocales Natural Park, El Estrecho Natural Park, Los Lances Natural protected beach (an area where many birds come together going to and from the crossing at the Strait of Gibraltar) and the Bolonia Dune Natural Monument. This dune is more than 30 metres high and is located on the Punta Camarinal isthmus, on the southern Atlantic coast of Cadiz.
