Seated on a beautiful hill, the Arab legacy is reflected in its popular architecture and in the urban planning of neighbourhoods such as that of the Jewish quarter (“la Judería”).
Forever walled, it still retains several towers (del Mayorazgo, San Juan and de la Corredera). Also, four doors of the medieval village are perfectly integrated into the urban complex: Arco de la Segur, Arco de la Villa, Arco de Sancho IV and Puerta Cerrada. The castle (11th-16th centuries) is located in the highest part of the old town. The access is possible through a beautiful horseshoe arch. It combines Muslim and Christian elements.
Sacred architecture has also left magnificent examples: the Parish Church of the Divino Salvador (14th-15th centuries) overlooks the village from above and shows a beautiful evolution of Gothic-Mudejar, Renaissance and Baroque art. The Church of the Monjas Concepcionistas, with the Arco de las Monjas, and the Hospedería de San Francisco Convent. On the outskirts, the Visigoth Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Oliva. Among its civil buildings, the Baroque Palace of the Marqués de Tamarón and the Casa del Mayorazgo stand out , both from the 18th century. We should also mention Las Tres AveMarías Windmills (19th century).
Just 9 kilometres away from Vejer de la Frontera you will find one of the most famous beaches in Cadiz: El Palmar Beach. Its fine golden sands stretch along more than 4 kilometres and contrast with its clear waters and beautiful natural surroundings. Wind in the area is the perfect ally for windsurfers.
Main Activities: Nature, Beaches, Tourism, Flamenco, Culture.
