Our travel guide to Barbate

Barbate is a white and bright town linked from ancient times to the sea and fishing, settling around its quaint fishing port. In its municipal term, there are places as famous as Los Caños de Meca and Zahara de los Atunes. A paradise for those who want to enjoy the beach, cuisine and water sports. Thanks to this Travel Guide of Barbate you can find all the activities and best travel tips for your trip.

History

Barbate is located where the Greeks called “Columns of Hercules”, with numerous prehistoric footprints (Caves of Fuente Santa and Mojama, with remains of schematic painting, anthropomorphic burials and Caño Arado dolmens). However, it was the Phoenicians who made Barbate an exporting port, when implementing the almadraba system that has been perpetuated until today.

With the Roman Empire, the town lives its greatest splendour, becoming a thriving place due to the fishing and salting industry. The Hermitage of San Ambrosio remains from the Visigothic period, located in the surroundings.

Los Caños de Meca is an extensive strip of sand and very clear waters, with natural grottos and cliffs where nudism can be practised (as in Zahora). La Hierbabuena Beach stands out for its wild state, while Zahara de los Atunes connects with that of Atlanterra.

Barbate is located within La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park, with multiple possibilities for leisure. Here there are itineraries equipped and marked to enjoy its scenic beauty and ecological wealth. You can go hiking, cycling, horseback riding and mountain sports.

You can also enjoy its famous Torres Vigías (Tajo, Trafalgar and Meca), built as a defense against pirate attacks in the area.
