Benalup-Casas Viejas is one of the entrance doors to Los Alcornocales Natural Park, and bridge between the Sierra de Cádiz and Marismas del Barbate. Its natural environment offers multiple leisure alternatives.
Inhabited since Prehistory, as evidenced by pictorial manifestations and anthropomorphic tombs excavated in the rocks of the Peñón del Tajo de las Figuras (the best collection of schematic painting in the prehistoric West) and Cuevas del Arco y Cimera. From the Muslim era it remains the Torre de la Morita.
Among its monuments, the Church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro stands out. But, without a doubt, the episode that made this town sadly famous was what has been known as the Casas Viejas Incident, the anarchist insurrection of 1933. The libertarian uprising was stifled by police forces and resulted in 22 dead civilians. Benalup-Casas Viejas would become a symbol of anarchist freedoms and an emblem for the peasant movement.
The Mirador del Parque, known as Tajo de la Sima, is a perfect observation point for migratory birds. In the surroundings of the Celemín Reservoir you can go hiking, play golf and collect fruits and vegetables, such as strawberry or asparagus.
It is interesting to walk along the riverbed or by bike to the dried out Laguna de la Janda, a migratory bird crossing area.
Main Activities: Active tourism, cuisine, nature.
