Thanks to this Travel Guide to Los Barrios you can find all the activities and the the best travel tips for your trip.
Los Barrios is nestled in the southernmost part of Andalusia, with an extraordinary location next to the Strait. It is one of the culinary references of the Campo de Gibraltar (Palmones). In addition, it allows us to know the history and local culture, carry out activities within its natural environment and enjoy the bathing areas, in addition to buying local crafts and witnessing shows, fairs and traditional events.
It is known that in the current Villa de Los Barrios there was human settlement during the Lower Paleolithic, being considered during the rest of Prehistory. Later, it was inhabited by a Roman colony, followed in the Middle Ages by a Muslim population. It was then divided into two neighbourhoods. Years later, the first Christian settlers, observing that their remains were distributed in two nearby hills separated by a trough, started to call it “Dos Barrios”.
It was in the year 1502, during the Modern Age, when it acquired the name of Los Barrios. The category of “Villa” (town) was granted by Isabella II of Spain in 1854.
It has a rich and varied cultural and natural heritage.
The Bacinete Caves. Schematic figures painted on sandstone dating back to the Upper Paleolithic. The same route leads us to the necropolis, where anthropomorphic tombs carved into the rocks of bare sandstones in the sun take us to the ancestral cult of death.
Parish Church of San Isidro Labrador. The silhouette of its 31-metres-high bell tower stands out. In eclectic style, classic, Gothic, Mudejar, Herrerian and Baroque elements are mixed. It is considered one of the best churches in the Campo de Gibraltar for its solid construction, elegant architecture and capacity. It is the centre of the old town.
The Old Wheat Granary, considered as model in its kind. It is, without a doubt, one of the best preserved granaries of Charles III of Spain times in Andalusia. It was built in 1768 and then expanded in 1779. Its recent municipal restoration in order to work as an exhibition hall allows you to look at the inner beauty of its wide half-barrel vault with lunettes that dose luminosity.
Betty Molesworth Botanical Park.
The Parody House was an old manor house that today houses the Isidro Gomez Culture House. It is an interesting sample of the old stately homes that existed at the end of the 18th century. It has two beautiful Andalusian patios, with high and low galleries and an elongated room that retains its original vault.
“La Montera” Bullring.
Abrigos de Puerto del Pajarraco (rock art), in the Palmones River reservoir.
Cerro de Carrahola Anthropomorphic tombs , Ringo – Rango Archaeological site in Villa del Puente Grande.
Botafuego Tower (medieval era), on Monte de La Torre.
House of the Urrutias. As the story goes, it was built by the same masons who did the work of the church. Apparently, it served as accommodation and headquarters for military authorities established in the town during the Great Siege of Gibraltar. It currently houses the Natural History collection and the Municipal Art Gallery.
Los Barrios Town Hall. This building has had several successive renovations and enlargements, of which the most significant one took place in 1781. According to the project of master builder Juan de Vargas, on that date two houses were demolished in order to built the new capitular building, respecting the stone façade that already existed. It houses the Municipal Historical Archive.
Moriscos Houses, typical construction of rural house of the former inhabitants of the countryside. Its structure is simple and has remained almost identical since ancient times. They were built with natural elements such as stone, heather and wood.
Botanical Garden.
Paseo de la Constitución.
Home of the Pensioner / Hospital de la Caridad. Building of the late eighteenth century that had an intense health activity in the nineteenth century, first with the epidemic of yellow fever and then with the wounded of the War of Independence.
Train station. It was built at the end of the 19th century, on the Bobadilla – Algeciras railway line. An unparalleled romantic stamp with a certain Anglo-Saxon architectural air.
Entre-Rios Tower, in Palmones. Built in 1588, instead of following the round design in use to better protect against artillery attacks, the square plant (already in disuse) was used with medieval elements, such as battlements and machicolations.
Guadacorte Lake, green area of 14,000 sqm where its central element is a beautiful artificial lake.
In addition, Los Barrios offers a wide variety of landscapes, such as Los Alcornocales Natural Park or the Marshes of the Palmones River. Therefore, it becomes a reference for the practise of ecotourism activities (bird watching) and active tourism (hiking, water sports and many more).
Main Activities: Nature, Active Tourism, Cuisine.
