The El Puerto de Santa Maria Endorheic Basin is composed of three lagoons: Salada, Chica and Juncosa Lagoons.
The Salada Lagoon is the largest one and, just like the Chica Lagoon, it dries up in the summertime. However, they are kept flooded during all the seasons in high rainfall years.
The Juncosa lagoon, due to its size and temporary character, stays dry almost throughout the entire year. Except for some specific periods of time when continuous raining occurs, which is why it is almost entirely covered by vegetation.
The ecological value of this reserve lies in being an important point for the conservation of birds, some endangered.
