WHAT TO SEE IN PATERNA DE RIVERA

Paterna de Rivera is located in the region of La Janda and is part of the Ruta del Toro. As a curiosity, it is the town that has given its name to the “petenera” form of flamenco expression.

The town has a beautiful natural environment, highlighting the Guadalcacín Reservoir. It is a place of great landscape interest that will enrich your visit to Paterna.

You will find here the Cortegana Recreational Area, where you can enjoy the natural environment around you.

As for cultural heritage, Paterna de Rivera has buildings of great value. A good example of this is the Nuestra Señora de la Hiniesta Church, a beautiful 16th century temple.

If we continue with the cultural heritage, we find the Monumento a la Petenera, as we mentioned above. It was built in 1982 in honour of the patenera singer Dolores “la petenera”, and was originally located in Plaza de la Constitución square.

The next tourist destination would be the well-known Torre de los Cuatro Vientos (Tower of the Four Winds). It is a canalization with the help of a powerful pump that takes the water that existed in abundance in springs to a reservoir: the Torreta. This was located in the currently Plaza del Mirador. It had a sufficient height so that it could reach without problems the different points established in the population.

Finally we must mention the Manantial Fuente Santa spring. It has therapeutic properties that are used for skin diseases, for the digestive system and the nervous system. It is the only source of sulphuro-saline water that remains, making it an important point of interest for Paterna.

To visit every corner of this municipality, you should wander its streets and enjoy the landscapes it offers.

We can highlight some festivities of Paterna de Rivera, such as the Feria de la Primavera in June and the Feria de la Juventud in July. The Doma Vaquera Competition in August (since this municipality is dedicated to the breeding of Spanish-Arabian horses), the Pilgrimage of San Sebastián, held in January in recent years, and the Villa de Paterna Carols and Living Bethlehem Contests, both in December.
