In this entry we want to talk about the main types of kites that exist in the market, so you can enjoy a unique kite day in our region. We will help you choose the perfect kite for kitesurfing.
If you want to practise kitesurf, one of the first decisions you have to make is to choose the type of kite that you are going to use. Several factors that will influence this decision: the weather, the place where you will practise kitesurf, or your level of experience.
To get you started, we will classify them into two large groups: inflatable kites and soft-kites.
Inflatable Kitesurf Kites
There are three types of inflatable kites. The first in the market was the C type. They are powerful kites thanks to their semicircular shape. However, this becomes a handicap. They have a low power reduction capacity, so it becomes a little unstable in gusty winds. The use of this kite is recommended for expert kite surfers and to perform freestyle.
Next are those of “bow” or flat type. These kites are a variant of type C. Their curvature is not as pronounced as the previous one. They have a completely versatile power of depower. Therefore, they are more stable than type C, although this makes them a little slower. These kites are perfect for gusty winds and beginners in kitesurfing.
The last in the group of inflatable kites is the hybrid kite. As its name suggests, it is a hybrid between the type C kite and the “bow” type. The strengths of the previous two such as power, speed, and reaction capacity come together in this kite. These kites become a perfect option for kitesurf students since they can learn safely and easily.
Soft-kites
Then, after the group of inflatable kites, we have the soft-kites. Those are kites that follow the traditional shape. At first glance, they seem more aerodynamic, but actually, they lack stability. So they are perfect for more expert kitesurfers, as they maintain better control.
Other types of kites
Finally, we have other types (outside the previous groups), such as the sigma kite type. In this, the trailing edge (bottom edge) is divided into two parts separated by a small protruding point. In another type of kite, the delta, the trailing edge is more pronounced and closed. It is the one with the smallest size of all. In summary, the most appropriate kites for those starting would be those of “bow” type, hybrid or flat. On the other hand, for the most expert surfers, those of C type and soft-kites are perfect for them.
