El Torreón – Grazalema Route leads to the Torreón (“fortified tower”), the highest peak in the Sierra del Pinar and the Province of Cádiz. It is located in the municipal district of Grazalema, and from its top you can contemplate a part of Andalusia.
It is a hard journey, but climbing to the top to enjoy unbeatable views is rewarding. As you go up the mountain, you may find characteristic geological formations of limestone terrain. You can see birds of prey, such as the golden eagle or the griffon vulture, and different birds. You can even find mountain goats!
As you go up, the vegetation around you is different. This is known as vegetation floors. When approaching the summit, the vegetation disappears, leaving the rock exposed.
El Torreón Route will give you magnificent views of the Grazalema Natural Park, including an incredible natural site. Here you will find is the only forest of Spanish firs (pinsapos) that exists in the world, right on the north face of the mountains.
Looking up, we can see the Garganta Verde and the Zahara de la Sierra and Olvera reservoir. To the right we find the peak of San Cristóbal, Ronda and, hopefully, Sierra Nevada. In the back we will see Benaocaz and the Strait of Gibraltar.
It is necessary to walk with the utmost caution, since it is very dangerous. There are stones in signal mode that mark the road, and some paint mark that guides you to reach the summit.
The difficulty of this El Torreón Route, as we have said before, is high; especially in the final part. To make this route you need a permit that must be requested at the El Bosque Visitor Centre.
Due to security conditions, from June 1 to October 15 this path is usually closed due to the risk of forest fire.
